The 2nd UKTA–Schwarzman Scholars Global Affairs Panel Successfully Held in London
On 16 May 2025, the UK Tsinghua Association and Schwarzman Scholars successfully co-hosted the second UKTA–Schwarzman Scholars Global Affairs Panel at Chatham House, London.Held under the timely theme “Are We Stepping into a Zero-Sum World of Geopolitics, Economics and Technology?”, the panel gathered leading experts in international relations and AI policy for a thought-provoking discussion. The event drew over 100 participants from academia, think tanks, government, and industry across the UK, US, and China, sparking lively and in-depth conversations throughout the evening.
The forum began with opening remarks from Yuan Gao, Secretary General and Vice Chairwoman of the UK Tsinghua Association, and was moderated by Karuna Nandkumar, Schwarzman Scholar and Head of Policy Programmes at the Oxford China Policy Lab.
The distinguished panelists included: Professor Peter Trubowitz, Director of the Phelan US Centre and Professor of International Relations at the LSE; Professor Huang Jing, Director of the Center for American and Pacific Studies at Shanghai International Studies University and the first mainland Chinese fellow at the Brookings Institution; and Johan Harvard, Global Lead for AI Advisory at the Tony Blair Institute and a leading expert in AI strategy.
The panel addressed key topics including US–China relations, the reshaping of the global order, AI governance, and prospects for international cooperation. Drawing on historical insights, the speakers explored how nations might seek constructive engagement and shared solutions amid intensifying global competition. The discussion prompted enthusiastic questions and engagement from the audience.
At the closing reception, Tracey Guinyard, Global Outreach & Selections Officer of the Schwarzman Scholars program, delivered brief closing remarks, thanking all speakers and attendees for their valuable contributions. Guests and participants continued their conversations in a warm and engaging atmosphere.
With the generous support of Chatham House, the forum reaffirmed the shared commitment of the UK Tsinghua Association and Schwarzman Scholars to fostering global dialogue and academic exchange among the next generation of leaders.
